Just a stone’s throw away from Jalan Besar Stadium is a café called the Bao Makers. Upon stepping into the cafe, you will be greeted with an interior that looks like a typical hipster café with industrial colours and minimalist décor. Be pleasantly surprised to hear that they sell not only the typical coffee and snacks but also Chinese styled steamed buns.
We simply had to try their steamed buns.
There is the Salmon Mentai Bao. Steamed bun filled with crispy deep-fried salmon coated with melted cheese and cod roe sauce. The sauce and the cheese are ever so slightly charred to give it an extra smoky flavour.
We also got the Salted Egg-yolk Shrimp Bao. Seasoned deep-fried shrimps topped with salted-egg yolk sauce wrapped up in a black sesame bun. The contrasting colours of the ash coloured bun, the yellow sauce and shrimps, together with the different textures and tastes makes this bun irresistible.
Of course, we had to get the Chili Crab Bao. Chili crab is one of the top loved dishes in Singapore, and what better way to enjoy this local specialty than pairing it with a bun! The deep-fried bun is filled to the brim with fresh crab meat mixed with chilli sauce and shallots. It tastes exactly like how you would dip your mantou into the sweet and spicy chilli crab sauce.
Fret not if baos aren’t really your thing, they have other dishes from fish and chips to spaghetti and rice bowls. You can try their Soft-Shell Crab Don. It consists of deep-fried whole soft-shell crab on rice and lettuce, garnished with shredded seaweed. Pour in the house blend curry sauce for some richness in your bowl. The don comes with a delectably soft onsen egg where the runny egg yolk combined with the rice, crab and the sauce is just to die for.
To wash it all down, we got the cool and refreshing mango milk which is simply fresh milk with layers of mango puree and mango cubes at the bottom of the glass. Mix it all up to get a mango milkshake!
